Be Prepared to be a Billy-No-Mates...?

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Scouting hardly has a hip and trendy image, despite Bear Grylls becoming our new Chief Scout. Even so, mocking people who give up their time to try to help young people develop into socially responsible young adults is going a bit too far. Today I was invited to join a Facebook group opposing Phones4u's latest ad campaign, which seems to think we're a fair target for their scorn. There's humour, and then there's ridicule, and I think this ad falls on the wrong side.

I know our uniform isn't exactly stylish, but I don't think that that's why Scouting is being mocked. Why does a campaign aimed at young people have to take the stance that volunteering is uncool, and that spending time in an organisation that promotes responsible citizenship is something to be ashamed of? Our Scout law promotes trust, loyalty, friendship, world brother/sisterhood, courage, time management, environmentalism and respect. Of the astronauts who have walked on the moon, 11 of the 12 were Scouts. We are doing our best to overturn the negative stereotypes, but this is just going to set us back in the eyes of the young people we're trying to recruit.

I'm tired so I may not be the most coherent at the moment, but if your phone contract is up for renewal, please think twice before approaching a Phones4u shop.
